Essential oils represent the jing, or the essence of plants, and have a long-drawn history in Chinese medicine. They have the power to assist the healing of a wide range of health disorders, either as a stand-alone modality or as a supplement to other therapy or treatments. In TCM aromatherapy, they are chosen based on their therapeutic properties and their relationship to the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) and the corresponding organs/ meridians in the body.

Bulgarian Rose
- Botanical name: Rosa damascena.miller
- Who it can help: For those dealing with anxiety, lung or liver issues, and post-surgery pain.

Rose activates the liver meridian, which is responsible for stress management and relaxes Qi stagnation symptoms like tension across the ribcage, flank pain, or a stifling sensation in the chest. In addition, rose regulates the Spleen meridian, alleviating digestive symptoms like fullness below the sternum, epigastric distention, low appetite, and gas. Working together on both meridians, the oil helps to improve digestion.
Rose also gently moves stagnant blood to help menstrual issues including irregular cycles, PMS, breast tenderness, and menstrual pain. It also soothes muscles to reduce painful cramps during menstruation.
Beyond physical ailments, rose oil is used in aromatherapy for its antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, and anti-viral properties. It is also an aphrodisiac and astringent; this essential oil is widely used for its hemostatic, neuro- and stomach properties.
Studies have also proven rose oil’s ability to reduce anxiety and stress, and ease pain after surgeries which may be attributed to its propensity to stimulate brain activity and release the feel-good hormone – sphincterin.

Frankincense essential oil contains properties that reduce feelings of anxiety, stimulate the immune system, and diminish signs of ageing. In Ayurvedic medicine, Frankincense is referred to as “dhoop” and is used to heal wounds, relieve arthritis, balance hormones in females, and purify the air.
Used in aromatherapy, Frankincense works as an expectorant to clear the nasal passageway, promote the relief of congestion, and encourage easy breathing. Its sweet, woody aroma is a sedative and enhances mood by diminishing feelings of stress and anxiety while improving concentration and memory.
Used medicinally, this anti-inflammatory oil is known to soothe inflamed skin by reducing the sensation of redness, swelling, and itching. It helps to disinfect and tighten the pores, thereby promoting the speedy healing of cuts, wounds, and scars. It is used to relieve flatulence, stimulate the growth of new skin cells, and stimulate blood flow and circulation.
It is traditionally used in TCM to promote Qi, the healing of ulcers and to remove stasis.

Geranium Essential Oil alleviates feelings of anxiety, sadness, fatigue, and tension, enhances concentration, improves cognitive function, and aids with hormonal imbalances. Used medicinally, Geranium Essential Oil works as an anti-inflammatory and anti-septic agent. soothe symptoms of menstruation and menopause, reduce blood pressure and pain, and boost immunity. The presence of tannin in the oil may also help alleviate diarrhoea, bladder inflammation, and other symptoms related to Crohn’s disease.
In TCM, Geranium also has affinities to the Heart, Lungs and Kidneys.

German chamomile is a herb whose flower heads have been used to make medicine. The oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can also speed up wound healing, reduce muscle spasms and serve as a mild sedative to improve sleep.
German Chamomile is used in TCM to soothe the liver and promote relaxation, much like Roman Chamomile. However, German Chamomile is also believed to have a strong anti-inflammatory effect and is used to treat a variety of inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis, asthma, and skin inflammation.
In addition, German Chamomile is sometimes used in TCM to treat digestive complaints, such as bloating, indigestion, and diarrhoea. It is also believed to have a calming effect on the stomach, which can help to relieve nausea and vomiting.

Nicknamed “The Oil of Empowerment” for inspiring confidence, ginger oil is used as an anti-nausea and anti-vomiting medication. Used medicinally, Ginger Essential Oil facilitates the elimination of toxins, boosts digestion, eases bowel discomfort, enhances appetite, clears the respiratory tract, soothes aches, and reduces inflammation. It is a common medicine for relieving stomach cold and wind-cold cold.
It has also traditionally been used as an anti-microbial food preservative that prevents the growth of harmful bacteria, and it has been used as a spice for its flavouring and digestive properties. In Ayurvedic medicine, Ginger Oil has traditionally been believed to soothe emotional difficulties such as nervousness, sadness, low self-confidence, and a lack of enthusiasm.

This calming, physically and emotionally balancing fragrance, has commonly been used for its relaxing effect on the body. Used medicinally, Lavender essential oil has been found to eliminate harmful bacteria, relieve muscle spasms, relieve flatulence, disinfect and soothe inflamed skin, promote speedy healing of irritated and scarred skin, and relieve muscle tension when used in a massage.
This mild sedative is reputed to reduce stress by relaxing the brain waves, which is also said to reduce cortisol levels that contribute to the stress hormone. As cortisol leads to lower immunity, Lavender would accordingly support the immune system by helping relieve feelings of stress that can weaken health. Due to its calming and relaxing properties, it can work as a sleep aid for those suffering from insomnia.
Used therapeutically in the practice of Chinese medicine, Lavender demonstrates its affinity to the Lung, Liver, and Pericardium, by helping to calm the Spirit, smooth Liver Qi, diffuse lung Qi, and release wind heat.

This essential oil has a special place in TCM for it possesses diaphoretic, gastric stimulant, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is well known for its uplifting & worry-reducing properties, making it ideal as an overall mood enhancer and relaxant.
It is used to boost energy, calm nerves, support digestion, relieve itching and pain, and promote regular periods. Regulate and replenish qi and blood, warm meridians, dispel cold and dampness, regulate digestive glands, relieve cough and reduce phlegm, promote circulation, and strengthen immunity.
Research has shown that it acts as an emmenagogue – that is, an agent that increases blood circulation to the pelvic area and uterus and stimulates menstruation. This could explain its use in treating breech births and menstrual cramps.

Myrrh oil is used to offer relief for bronchitis and phlegm. Its sedative scent is known to lift negative moods and promote the feeling of being grounded.
Used medicinally, it facilitates the healing of wounds by protecting them from infection and by calming tissue inflammation. Its astringent property helps prevent wounds from haemorrhaging, thus preventing excessive blood loss. With emmenagogue properties, Myrrh Oil is known to regulate menstruation and ease its negative symptoms, such as hormonal imbalances that lead to mood swings.
Myrrh is used more frequently in Ayurveda, Unani medicine and Western herbalism, which ascribe tonic and rejuvenate
properties to it. A related species, known as guggul in Ayurvedic medicine is considered one of the best substances for the treatment of circulatory problems, nervous system disorders and rheumatic complaints, Myrrh (Daindhava) is used in many rasayana formulas in Ayurveda.
Roman Chamomile

Roman Chamomile oil is valued for its cleansing and moisturizing properties. Traditionally, Roman chamomile has been used to treat nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and gas as it contains anodyne compounds. As a mild sedative, it is often inhaled to relieve anxiety and promote better sleep. Used on the skin, it may also reduce inflammation from cuts or haemorrhoids and ease discomfort from eczema and gingivitis.
With its antispasmodic properties, Roman Chamomile oil soothes body aches, headaches, back pain and menstrual cramps. It also works as a natural anti-inflammatory agent that penetrates deep into the skin as a natural remedy for eczema, rushes and other skin irritations while having properties that can treat arthritis and joint pain.
It also promotes heart health because of its high levels of flavonoids that can help to lower blood pressure. The silent hero for seasonal allergies, it is commonly used to treat hay fever due to its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. It helps relieve swelling, mucus congestion and skin outbreaks associated with seasonal allergy symptoms and food allergies. Its gentleness makes it applicable to be used on children.
